The Central and South Brevard area has 4 hospitals managed by the non-profit Health First Melbourne FL organization. Over the years, healthcare and hospital beds have increased dramatically in Brevard County as we have seen the Space Coast grow from a sparsely populated area to a bustling small metropolis with a diverse population.
Back in 1937 Brevard Hospital opened its doors with 27 beds (my mom worked there in the 1970′s when it was a 3 story 1 wing building) and has since grown to be the largest hospital in Brevard County with 514 beds and changed its name to Holmes Regional Medical Center. In addition to Holmes, there are 3 more Health First hospitals in Brevard. They are Cape Canaveral Hospital with 160 beds, Palm Bay Hospital with 60 beds and Viera Hospital with 84 beds that are all private. I guess if you need to go to the hospital an all private room in Viera would probably be the best. Holmes Regional also features all private rooms in its D wing heart center.

If you are an exercise enthusiast or just need to lose some weight and get into shape, Health First’s Pro-Health and Fitness is one of the best exercise facilities in all of Brevard County. This is not some gym rat hang out where you will see only beefy guys and hear loud metal music playing all day long, it is a serious fitness center. It features such first class amenities as full size basketball courts, swimming pools, running tracks, top of the line exercise equipment, yoga, swimming and cardio / aerobic classes, and personal trainers and a helpful staff that is both professional and knowledgeable.
While it is not cheap to join Pro-Health ($100 enrollment plus $50 a month), the amenities and the facilities are not like any other gym you have been to. Plus this is not a facility that is intent on just signing you up and getting your money, they are known for having people in the gym at all times to help you work the machines and instruct you on how to get into shape. Really, don’t be fooled by other cheap gyms that charge $15 to $25 a month. They may be good for the gym rat and the person that knows how to exercise and use all that equipment, but they aren’t all that friendly to the uninitiated.
