Anyone remember the days when downtown Melbourne was dead? My wife and I used to walk the antique shops row, go into a few and then ask ourselves the question, “how do these places stay in business?” That’s no longer the case, possibly because of Matt’s Casbah which seems to be the local downtown Melbourne hot spot these days.
If you remember Pop’s Casbah that was the inexpensive place to eat in Melbourne everyone used to go to, Matt’s is in the same location. I don’t know if there is any family connection between Pop’s 50 plus years in business and Matt’s 3 or 4 year reign, but the 2 restaurants couldn’t be more different. Pop’s Casbah occupied the back half of what appeared to be a long gone out of business gas station and was your typical greasy spoon eatery complete with checkerboard table cloths and white flour easy-pull-apart-pre-packaged dinner rolls. Matt’s on the other hand is all about chic, trained chefs and expensive cigars.
Matt’s has also taken over the entire southeast corner of the intersection of East New Haven Ave and Waverly Place and has an outdoor bar and seating area that adds to the ambiance of the downtown Melbourne experience. You can also enjoy live music on the patio 5 nights a week Tuesday thru Saturday. You can hear the action going on at Matt’s patio down the street a ways past the restaurant so their marketing is built right into their business.
Their menu selections range from sushi to sandwiches and hors d’oeuvres munchies to filet Mignon. There are also separate menus for the bar and happy hour outdoor area. And if you are feeling a bit adventurous, then Matt’s even has cigar selections for those that indulge. And indulge you can, if that’s your desire, as the most expensive cigar at the restaurant tips the scale at $167. This information came about from a conversation with our bartender so, you’ll have to ask about the expensive wines and cigars because they don’t appear on the menus.
What Jean and I liked the most about Matt’s is that if you plan it out, you can sit at the outdoor bar on once a month evenings and watch the full moon come up above the building directly to the east of the restaurant around 10:00 to 10:30 pm. It’s quite striking and a great way to end an evening date with your spouse while enjoying a romantic moonrise.
Maybe we’ll see you during the next full moon at Matt’s Casbah?
