Located in one of the fastest growing areas of the state of Florida, Palm Bay High School sits on the border of the city of Palm Bay and the city of Melbourne at the corner of Pirate Lane and Babcock Street. Two time state football champions in the last 12 years (2000 and 2002), the Pirates of PBHS are known for their Friday night football fests among other things. But football is not all that sets PBHS apart.
Academically, the school offers both regular and honors level classes. In fact they offer 18 AP (or advanced placement) level classes like: European history, Calculus AB and BC, Studio Art: 2D, Micro and Macro Economics, Music Theory, Environmental Science, Human Geography, Chemistry, Statistics and much more. For students who really want to be challenged, PBHS has three so called Academies. The Academies of PBHS include the only AP or advanced placement Academy in the south part of Brevard county, a graphic and web design academy and a law and public safety academy. Classes and programs are offered for students with a range of special needs like: vision impairment, deaf and hard of hearing; learning disabled, gifted, intellectually disabled, emotional behavioral disabilities as well as other health impairments.
Besides the academic programs, Palm Bay High School is replete with extra curricula activities to challenge a variety of student’s interests. Activities like drama, chess, Environmental Club, ROTC, music and journalism abound not to mention the impressive athletic programs. There are also more than one technology related clubs and a high school branch of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes which is open to athletes and non-athletes alike. The ethnic/racial makeup of the student body is primarily Caucasian (54%), African American (24%), and Hispanic (12%).
The vision statement for the student body is to “To educate and inspire students for the challenges of today and tomorrow.” Consistent with that vision, in 2011, 90% of the graduating students went on to either a 2 or 4 year college or university. A full 47% went on to pursue their education at a 4 year university or college, while only 10% remained undecided, went into the military or decided to go into the workforce.
